Team Sutherly

Some weekends we are in the ring showing livestock. Some weekends we are on the lake surfing the waves or jumping the wake. Either way, we enjoy time together as a family and with friends.

Sam and Laura have been a long history in agriculture. Third generation Sutherly Brothers LLC has an Angus-based herd of brood cows, feeds out its own calves and sells a few club calves. Sam is a manager of Miami Valley Feed & Grain. Laura owns and operates Agtivation LTD, a digital design agency that promotes and elevates ag businesses online.

We met in Poultry Science 101 at The Ohio State University. For our second date, Sam took Laura to his family farm and introduced her to his entire family. A few dates later, Laura invited him to eastern Ohio to meet her family and to see the Century Farm. Once married we moved back to Troy, Ohio.

Our passion is sustainable agriculture. Both of us were raised on farms. We currently farm. And, we are raising future farmers - twins, Emma and Samuel.

Emma is studying Ag Communications and Animal Science at K-State University and Samuel is studying Precision Ag at Clark State while working on the family farm. The goats are on hold until Em returns, but Samuel is growing his cattle herd with a strong Angus base.

It's a Family Thing

Roots run deep and we're a proud supporter of agriculture.

Miami Valley Feed and Grain

Miami Valley Feed & Grain

Yes, we are the family who owns that business. Yes, that business that was the #1 news story in 2018 when a million dollar corn spill devastated our family owned and operated grain elevator in New Carlisle, Ohio.

The Sutherly family owns Miami Valley Feed and Grain where a grain tank collapsed late on Jan. 21, spilling around 365,000 bushels of corn worth over $1.25 million. The wave of corn knocked out power and buried State Route 571.  No employees were present at the facility at the time and no injuries occurred.

Today, the new facility is fully functional and welcomes new customers daily.

Passion for cattle

Ohio Cattle Farmer Shares Her Passion

We asked Miami County Farm Bureau member Laura Sutherly to share her passion for working in agriculture, the animals raised on her farm and the meals they prepare. We hope you'll read more about them in the upcoming May issue, visit OurOhio.org to try one of their recipes and that knowing them adds something to your next meal!

OCA Commercial Producer of the Year

OCA Commercial Producer of the Year

Working well together and having a strong work ethic are traits that are deeply instilled in the Sutherly family members who run the farm operation today. Third generation Sutherly Brothers LLC is this year’s OCA Commercial Producers of the Year.

The family has an Angus-based herd of about 200 brood cows, feeds out its own calves and sells a few club calves. And that’s only one part of the family business. They also own and operate Miami Valley Feed & Grain in nearby New Carlisle, raise 1,800 acres of cash crops and Sam does custom fertilizer application and sells seed to area farmers.

OCA’s Industry Excellence Award

OCA’s Industry Excellence Award

Sam and Laura Sutherly of Troy, Ohio, received the OCA’s Industry Excellence Award, recognizing their continued efforts to promote the beef industry.

Sam and Laura, along with their two children, Emma and Sam, have a cow-calf operation of 135 commercial cows. Sam has served as president of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, Ohio Beef Expo Junior Show chairman, and now chairman of the Ohio Beef Expo, where he has developed new programs, educational seminars and helped raise funds for the junior show.

Laura, a former Ohio Beef Queen, has partnered with OCA and Ohio Beef Council to develop their websites and technology.

Friends of the Expo

Friends of the Expo - Laura Sutherly

One individual who does a great deal of behind the scenes work, both before and during Expo, is Laura Sutherly, of Troy. She is someone who does not feel worthy of the award when looking at previous winners, however her efforts have not been overlooked.

"Laura Sutherly can be credited with helping to pull, push and drag the Ohio Beef Expo into the age of technology," remarks Harsh. "She was responsible for helping the Expo create its first real functional Web site that truly showcased all aspects of the Expo. In addition she has helped the Expo provide real time junior show results that are fitting for such a competitive junior event."

Friends of the Expo

Friends of the Expo - Sam Sutherly

It's easy to see how Sam Sutherly can be called Friend of the Expo. Sam first started volunteering on the junior show committee at the Ohio Beef Expo and with his hard work, two years later, earned the spot of Junior Show Chairman. As chairman, Sam wanted to continue to improve the junior show. He created educational events that had never been done before, like fitting demonstrations and contests, along with bringing in more sponsors to support the Expo.

With Sam’s involvement and dedication he was named the co-chairman of the Ohio Beef Expo, and has served as the chair of the Expo for the past five years. Sam has also served as president of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association.
